I asked to have this topic posted because I am interested in interacting with gay educators on all levels. Discussions could include many topics of interest.

Have you ever considered going to a GLSEN meeting? They are quite an active group of gay educators and allies and have some interesting programs. What level do you teach? I teach in facility for juvenile delinquint males. They are very homophobic for the most part but I hold my ground. It isnt easy but now that I am near retirement I am becoming a bit more bold.

Ive never been to a GLSEN meeting. Ill check into it.
I teach on the college level. It sounds like you have a challenging job! That population is not easy to work with in any way.

I will gladly jump in on this one!! My partner and I are having a child. We decided that she would be the one to stay and home and be the Mom. THis meant that I would be the one to get pregnant, as I would be the one to be working, and consequently, I would be the one with benefits. Long story short, I do NOT understand how insurance companies can deem that I am not eligle for the Family coverage so that we can have insurance for my partner and, her child, were she to be the birth mom. Instead, I can only get the coverage for myself and the child. We pay an exorbitant amoount for my partners health insurance each month. This is just one of many examples that I could give you of how lack of benefits hurts us, significantly!

I am a special ed. teacher at the elementary level. I am out at work with other staff and the principal. My students know that I live with my daughter and Carol, but since they are multi-handicapped kids, they unfortunately for the most part dont ask questions like do you have a husband? or Does Jesse my daughter have a dad? so I dont have to get into it with them.

I second Dterngr8c message regarding lesbian households having to pay for a family health plan and single coverage for the non-bio parent.
I pay the same amount to cover myself and my daughter as a straight employee pays for their spouse and an unlimited number of children. I plan to inquire with our Union rep. soon about this cause Im getting real tired of the extra expense. Last year when I applied for sick leave cause I had to go pick up my partner at the E.R. after she was rear-ended in backed up traffic, the personnel department tried to tell me that I couldnt use sick leave cause my partner isnt my spouse. I told my principal quite heatedly because I was not a happy camper that I had no intention of using a personal day instead of a sick day, especially since I had to use 2 of 4 personal days already to practice my religion Jewish holidays. I never heard anything more about the issue...

Ive never heard this discussed before, but regarding gale male elmentary teachers, how often have we heard self-righteous homophobes spew their inanities such as How would you like your young son to be taught by a homosexual man? Yet these same clowns have no problems with their young daughters being taught by heterosexual men. Anyone with experiences regarding this, positive or negative? Comments?

To Misio regarding gay friendly churches:

Im not a church goer myself, but Pilgrim Congregational United Church of Christ in Tremont may be what you are looking for. I suspect it is gay friendly because they once staged some Tennessee Williams plays that I attended some years ago. They also sponsor art related events. Here is their contact info:

Pilgrim Congregational United Church of Christ
2592 W. 14 Street
Cleveland, Ohio 44113
216 861-7388
Contact: Rev. Craig Schaub, Rev. Laurie Hafner

A freelance writer friend of mine needs GLBT parents to discuss teen pregnancy and their experiences with it with their child. Anyone here familiar with such a situation or know someone who would be willing to be interviewed anonymously if necessary? Write me at brianwfairbanks@yahoo.com

Hey all! My name is Ben. Im a 21 yo social
work major living in a very small backwards
town. We have a large closeted population of
young adults, who are terrified of coming out
due to past incidences of violence and
discrimination. Im attempting to make a
collection of experiences which will be used in
an outreach program in my old highschool, and
my church community. If anyone would be
willing to send me a page or 2 or...whatever
length, of experiences theyve had I would
GREATLY appreciate it.

Im looking for personal experiences with
prejudice/ stereotyping/ feelings of isolation/
family problems....but I would also like to
collect GOOD expriences as well. I want to
make a collection of experiences these kids can
relate to. If youre interested PLEASE WRITE
ME at Prob0176@fredonia.edu

I am a college student at the University of West Florida, in Pensacola, FL. I am an English major, Education minor with the intention of teaching high school English. One of the courses I am taking, Teaching Diverse Populations, includes a final paper that covers a culture that does not align with the mainstream ideals. Especially in this area of the US, there is a very large religious base and directly related, there is a lot of homosexual discrimination. I want to write my paper on homosexual educators and their overall experiences. If anyone is willing to work with me one on one, or give me any feedback at all I would greatly appreciate it! Privacy would be respected, and if you wish, I could email a copy of the paper when it is finished for your reviewing! Please let me know if you are interested!!
